Our Ethos

Build a homewares brand driven by ethics, not profit

Matter is a social enterprise, focused on social and environmental goals rather than financial gain.  We aim to provide the Australian market with ethically sourced homewares, while also providing a place for communities around the world to sell their handcrafted wares. We've sought out authentic, well designed items made with integrity. Our customers know that every item we offer has been considered thoroughly; from the design, to materials, labour and production, to repair opportunities, and the product's end of life.

Preserve traditional handcraft skills & techniques

Preserving traditional handcrafts and the skills and techniques unique to different cultures is important to us. We want to engage communities using traditional techniques, to encourage the continuation of knowledge and culture.  We established Matter to help create work opportunities that will change lives, by providing an outlet for traditional makers. The tactile nature of a handcrafted item tells the story of its maker, and we hope that every time you pick up one of our products you take a moment to appreciate its beauty and connect with its origins. (Plus, working with your hands is good for the soul)

Respect the environment, and people we work with

Doing business ethically is at the heart of what we do, and for us that means respecting both the people we work with and the environment.

We want to change lives by creating fair income avenues for traditional makers around the world. We feel that engaging in fair and direct trade practices is a more effective and sustainable approach than charity. We also consider the environmental impact of a product's whole lifespan, not just its initial components. Matter presents quality products that are made from natural raw materials, that will last the test of time, and finally can be returned to the earth at the end of a product’s life.

Our Design Considerations

The following questions are very important to us: they are at the core of our business and provide the framework for all decisions from design stages, through production, use and end-of-life. Every product we release might not tick every box, but we do the best we can, and only select products that pass the majority of these questions.  We've gathered a selection of simple, everyday products to help you enjoy the small moments in life. And we hope they become life-long favourites.
